Karen Erickson Getting Started With Drama, is a great resources for lessons and activities.I Like the 4 word focus.
concentration
imagination
imitation
transformation
These words are used with the actor’s tools in my class.
I need to gather my resources and begin writing integrated creative dramatics lessons for remediation classes.I will make a list and post sometime soon.
I got the Actor’s Tool Box and One Minute Challenge activities from Sean Layne at the Summer Institute in Greenville.I have participated in many of his workshops.
Materials:
Opaque materials such as: poster board, light cardboard, light plastic
Translucent/transparent materials such as: tissue paper, colored plastic sheets or plastic wrap, clear tape.
Brads or paper fasteners, hole punch, bendable drinking straws, tape, scissors
1. Cut out a character from poster board (you can work from a tracing).
2. Cut out eyes and features where you want the light to shine through. Use translucent or transparent materials to add color and feature designs.
3. Tape a drinking straw handle to the back.
4. For one with movable parts, you’ll need to cut out the parts individually.
5. Use the paper hole punch to make one hole in the movable part and another in the body where the part will be attached.
6. Use a paper fastener to join together the pieces.
7. Tape an extra straw handle to the back of the movable part.
Use your shadow puppet to act out and tell a story.
These are a few of the books I have used to connect drama and math.We acted out number sentences with and without props. We also did some one-minute challenges.
Research Resources:
Read Any Good Math Lately, by David Whitin and Sandra Wilde
It’s the Story That Counts , by David Whitin and Sandra Wilde
Read –alouds for One Minute Challenges
Over in the Jungle by Marianne Berkes
Over in the Ocean by Marianne Berkes
Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni
Creating and Acting Out Number Sentences/Word Problems
Monster Math by Anne Miranda
The Lion’s Share by Matthew McElligott
Math Fables by Greg Tang
This activity goes with the book Pumpkin Moon by Tim Preston. All you need is orange paper plates and triangles.
Students can act out the scenes from the book easily with these props/masks.
The hardest thing about mask making is cutting out the eyes so many children need help, especially kindergarteners. It’s good that students learn to do this by themselves, less work for me!!!!
I was perusing the “Everyday Math Curriculum” used at our school and they had a literature list for each grade level. I emailed teachers to ask them if they knew of this list and if so did they use any of the books on it. I can use some of those books for the activities I am planning.I also might have opportunities to collaborate with other teachers.
